I expected this to be my least favorite port. What do you think of when St Tropez is mentioned? Bridget Bardot, yachts, Porsche sunglasses and celebrities strewn on nude beaches - right. Well, yes and no ...
There WAS a regatta leaving today, so many expensive sailboats lined the docks. We watched them depart under BMW and Rolex pennants.
The village of St Tropez was actually quite nice, likely because the famous beaches and people are actually 30 minutes away. The earliest inhabitants lived behind fortress walls that still stand today and enclose many narrow alleys lined with stucco homes. We joined a guided walking tour and learned the village was named after an actual saint who washed up ashore, headless, accompanied by a rooster and a dog, having been executed by the Romans for converting to Christianity - in Pisa. Quite a trip. Every year on April 29, a group of locals make a pilgrimage to Pisa ... to see the head.
.
We were on several vessels today. The Mariner drops anchor in the bay and we tender to shore. Part of our day was a side trip to Port Grimaud - the Venice of St Tropez? It's a manufactured village of islands and peninsulas for homeowners who want to travel exclusively by boat. We drooled over the pastel colored homes from small boats - electric of course ... wouldn't want to disturb the residents.
We raise anchor tonight at midnight and sail to Monaco and Monte Carlo.
